Addressing the Top Three Virtual Learning Concerns: How PacPrep Reaches Through the Screen
Although we’re all familiar with remote learning thanks to the pandemic, our model at PacPrep could not be further from that experience in traditional schools. Our Curriculum Specialist, Erika Sneath, addresses the top three questions about how virtual learning can be ideal for all kinds of students.
We hear the following questions regularly. As a 1:1 virtual school, we understand that things work a little differently. In fact, that’s part of why we’re so passionate about what we do!
Is my child only going to be using the computer?
My child is active! How will you be able to help her?
Will my child miss out on science experiments?

Definitely not; we use a combination of digital and physical resources to spark student interest and creativity! We ship all learning supplies directly to your home. We also ship materials to our teachers. This means that each student and teacher has exactly what they need to engage in hands-on learning daily. This includes traditional school supplies such as journals and books, but also includes completely customized resources based on the student’s learner profile. What does this mean? It starts with our personalized approach to the application process. Getting to know the student as a child first and learner second, helps us determine what unique tools will help them be successful in our learning environment. For example, one of our students is working diligently to develop his executive functioning abilities. We sent him and his teacher a package of materials and tools that will help them work collectively on this goal (see the image below).
My child is active! How will you be able to help her?
Along those same lines, a child that is highly active is able to participate in ways that help them feel successful at our school. This might look like utilizing a wobble chair or cushion instead of a typical desk chair while working, or that we ship them a small trampoline so they’re able to jump while talking with their teacher or on a break. Every student at PacPrep, regardless of their age, grade, academic levels or abilities, is given varied opportunities to engage in course content. Hands-on resources such as base ten blocks or a rubix cube are used in combination with traditional digital tools such as Jamboard, RocketBooks, or G Suite, allowing students to participate authentically. Furthermore, our teachers naturally integrate movement breaks within classes so that everyone can get up and moving while working virtually.
Will my child miss out on science experiments?
As a former classroom teacher, I completely understand when families express concerns about science class in the virtual space. After all, I believe in the practical application of lessons, which includes the trial and error components in science experiments! Similar to what’s described above, our students and teachers are mailed any and all supplies needed for experiments and labs. This can include anything from seeds and soil to plant a flower, to test tubes for chemicals, and metal blocks for density exploration. Our teachers plan lessons in advance so that materials are shipped before the in-class experiments. They then lead the student through the hands-on application of the lesson and provide space to explore the full scientific process.
