Teacher of the Month⼁Introducing Chris C.
At Pacific Preparatory, we are so lucky to work with the most thoughtful and inspiring instructors, all who bring lessons to life with engaging connections to student interests and their community. This month, we are excited to celebrate Chris, whose favorite element of teaching is empowering students to harness their social studies knowledge to actively and effectively.
Chris (he/him) is a lifelong enthusiast of the social sciences. Academically, he has achieved a B.A. in Political Science from Rutgers University and an M.A. in Politics from New York University - graduating with high honors and distinctions in both courses of study. Professionally, he has served as a passionate social studies educator since 2011 - exploring centuries of American history and global studies with his high school students, and unpacking the complex dynamics of government and politics with his college-level students. With Tutor Corps and PacPrep, Chris teaches high level history. Additionally, Chris is certified to teach our Study Skills curriculum to support students with executive functioning, organization, time management, and goal setting. When Chris is not tutoring, he enjoys being in nature with his wife and dog, advocating for important social causes, and engaging with interesting storytelling in film, television, and interactive media.
When did you start teaching and why?
I began my teaching career as a college instructor of political science back in 2011, and then transitioned to teaching high school social studies in 2016. I’ve always prided myself on being a life-long learner of new knowledge and skills, and observing my wife’s talent and impact as a teacher inspired me to professionally enter the field of education, as well.
What’s your favorite subject to teach and why?
One of my favorite subjects to teach within the social sciences is American politics and government. I believe civic-mindedness is especially essential for students navigating our modern society, and I enjoy supporting my students’ academic journeys of discovering their political views and values as they enter young adulthood.
What do you enjoy most about teaching with Pacific Preparatory?
In my experience teaching with Pacific Preparatory, I’ve most enjoyed the customization and flexibility with my lesson design. Not only has this enhanced student interest in the topics we learn about in our classes, but it's also offered me a positive professional challenge to find the more interesting and unique angles for approaching each lesson topic.
What is your favorite activity to do outside of teaching?
One of my favorite activities to do beyond teaching is to spend time exploring nature with my family and friends. My wife and I recently rescued our dog, June, and we’ve come to realize that our time spent together walking through local parks and hiking trails in the Catskill Mountains is always a restorative experience for all of us.
Chris, we and your students are so lucky to have you on our team! Congratulations on being our Teacher of the Month!
