Five Reasons to Enroll Your Children in Courses at Pacific Preparatory School

On the fence about enrolling your child in one or more courses with Pacific Preparatory this fall (yes, we’re still enrolling for fall!) or spring? Here are five reasons to tip you over the edge.

1. Your Kids Love Learning -- Or, They Used To

Perhaps your child is having a just “okay” fall semester with distance learning. For many students, engaging in video calls with a virtual classroom of 20 or more other students--as many kids have done over the last several months--is really challenging. It’s easy for kids to get lost in the mix, and as a result, become scholastically uninspired.

We regularly talk with parents who have incredibly bright students who tend to tune out without the appropriate academic rigor. Enrolling your child in just a single high quality one-on-one course with a dynamic, thoughtful teacher who can tailor learning to your child’s interests and level may be just what your child needs to re-ignite their spark and joy for school.

2. Your Kids Need Strong Mentors

Victoria Santos, co-director of Young Women Empowered, says: “Research shows that young people with mentoring relationships are more resilient, more likely to set and meet personal goals, volunteer in their community and more likely to be leaders.”

In one-on-one learning, students receive both the benefit of instruction tailored to their own particular needs and a “built-in” mentorship network in the form of their teachers. Our teachers can adjust what they do according to what’s most helpful to our students and families, whether that means supporting students to build the right habits, guiding them through school applications, making specific recommendations for outside of lessons, or simply being present for them in one-on-one lessons.

3. Your Kids Struggle with Organization & Self-Advocacy

Does your child find it challenging to track and keep up with their schoolwork? Are they unsure of how to study, making it so they tend to do poorly on tests in school or have difficulty retaining information? If so, your child may need to develop their executive functioning skills. In addition to teaching subject matter, one-on-one teachers can be a valuable asset for supporting your student in developing the crucial executive functioning skills that will set them up for success in school and life. All of our teachers are trained in how to teach study skills and can help your child in building their self-awareness, working memory, motivation, organizational skills, and planning and problem solving skills.

4. Your Kids Are Falling Behind

Many parents connect with us because they’ve found that their child is behind in a certain subject area or academic skill, whether it’s foundational math skills, writing abilities, or reading comprehension. At Pacific Prep, all of our teachers start by assessing students’ understanding and content knowledge by utilizing diagnostic assessments in math and English language arts. These diagnostics help us to create a learning roadmap for your child so that we know exactly which academic “gaps” need to be filled.

5. You Crave Piece of Mind

At Pacific Preparatory, you can rest assured that your kids are in great hands. You won’t just have great teachers helping make sure your kids are engaging in learning -- you’ll have a whole team, every one of us dedicated to ensuring your child’s academic and emotional success during this challenging time.

Every week teachers provide incredibly thoughtful weekly updates to families, including screenshots of science labs and completed academic projects, and your kids can take part in any number of our school community opportunities, like book clubs or paint nights.

Overall, we’ve found that there may be one specific reason that one-on-one courses with Pacific Preparatory make sense for your family, and many times, it’s some combination of the several reasons above.

One of our current students, a sixth grader, is enrolled in two courses with us as a supplement to his school’s distance learning program. He chose to take a science course with one of our experienced science teachers because he has a natural interest in science and he loves conducting science labs (yes, we even do them virtually!). This is his “fun” class! Additionally, he’s enrolled in an English language arts course to help him further develop his writing and reading comprehension skills.

Whatever your child’s need, we’re here to help. As a fully accredited school, we can provide a full course load and teach all of the core courses (math, science, English language arts, history/social studies) as well as any desired elective courses. Alternatively, we’ve successfully supported students with just one or two high-quality courses to supplement their learning in school.

We hope you enjoy the remainder of your fall semester, and we look forward to connecting with you around your academic plans! Request more information here.
